Chouinard came home from a 1970 climbing trip to Scotland wearing one, and the reason it caught on in Yosemite is a detail rather than a look: the collar folded instead of chafing under a harness, and the cotton took a gear haul without giving up. He started importing them, and one of Patagonia’s first clothing lines quietly propped up the thin margins on climbing hardware. Back for fall in Regenerative Organic Certified cotton jersey, $139.
