Oaxaca’s historic centre gets its color from cantera, the green volcanic stone quarried from this exact pit until the site was long abandoned and reopened as a public park in 1988. The old diggings are now ponds that mirror the cut rock faces, some fitted with climbing holds, and a stage and stone seating have since been built into the walls.
