The Park Hyatt Tokyo (Kenzo Tange, 1994) was a generation’s idea of a Japanese hotel — high above Shinjuku, the Bill Murray hotel, the New York Grill jazz lounge. After thirty years it closed for a top-to-bottom redesign by Studio Jouin Manku. The brief was the rare one of “respect what’s working without freezing it.” Reopened spring 2026; the Tange tower bones still there, the interiors new but quiet.
