Painting la Manche: Calais to Étretat

The French Channel coast in a dozen paintings, from Turner's rough crossing to Monet's storm

Painting la Manche: Calais to Étretat

Howard Oakley’s return leg to last month’s tour of England’s Channel coast: west from the ferry port at Calais to the cliffs at Étretat, a painter per stop. Turner crossed in 1802, caught a rough sea, and his Calais Pier was panned at the Royal Academy for an unfinished foreground; Lepic’s fishing boat entering Berck has sheared its bowsprit; Isabey’s laundresses at Dieppe work between showers. Jongkind found Étretat in 1852 while it was still undiscovered, and Monet’s 1883 storm there became a series.
