Painting la Manche: le Havre to Ouessant

Monet's home port, Millet's trick of scale, and an island of a thousand souls

Painting la Manche: le Havre to Ouessant

Howard Oakley’s second leg west from Le Havre, where Monet grew up from age four and painted the fishing boats at Sainte-Adresse, past Vallotton’s fogbound Honfleur to the pastel cliffs of Gréville: Millet’s clifftop looks distant until a man reclining on the skyline gives away how close it really is. Signac dated his Paimpol watercolour to the day — 13 August 1929 — and the tour ends at Ouessant, an Atlantic island of under a thousand people, in Henry Moret’s 1902 cliffs.
