The golden pin every distance sign in the city counts from

Every sign telling you how far it is to somewhere else has to be counting from something. In Osaka that something is a golden pin set into the ground, the datum installed in 1922 at the point where seven national highways start and end. The marker you stand over now dates from 1957, but the granite plate beneath it has been in place since 1919.
