A carved stone grasshopper skull — Patricio Santiago’s “Chapulín Calavera,” cut from green cantera stone — greets arrivals in the parking lot of Oaxaca’s airport. It’s a deliberate inversion: Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s great printmaking capitals, home to Rufino Tamayo, Rodolfo Morales and Francisco Toledo, but when the airport began displaying art after its 2019 renovation, it chose sculpture over graphic work for the monumentality only a three-dimensional piece delivers to someone walking to their car.
