On Corry Street, on Madison’s East Side, a booth built in memory of Nick Weerts — who died in 2017 and had an oddly persistent fascination with payphones — comes alive when you lift the receiver. It plays a random clip from more than ten hours of recordings: friends talking, music, a family gathering, a comedy routine. Hang up and pick up again for another. Japan’s wind phones let you speak to the dead; this one runs the other way.
