1,300+ restored hand-colored plates from a Victorian-era natural history series

Naturalist's Library Wildlife Illustrations

Designer Nicholas Rougeux has restored and digitized every plate from The Naturalist’s Library, a 40-plus-volume Victorian series that once cost six shillings a volume and brought illustrated natural history within reach of the everyman. More than 1,300 hand-colored 19th-century plates — birds, quadrupeds, marsupials — are free to browse and download, with the restoration process documented in a companion blog post.
