In 1962 NASA’s administrator decided photographs were not going to be enough and began commissioning artists to record the space program. More than 350 went, Warhol, Norman Rockwell and Annie Leibovitz among them. They were briefed on the feeling NASA hoped for and then not edited or censored at all, and the agency kept everything they made — a building full of engineers deliberately buying an unreliable narrator.
