mordent

The word for a musical bite, which cannot stop biting its own spelling

A mordent is a note, the note just above or below it, and the original note again in quick succession — from Italian mordente, biting, on record in English since 1806. Its near-twin mordant bites too, in the wit sense, from the same Latin mordere; both spellings are accepted for the ornament. As A.Word.A.Day puts it: “Even the spelling gets to improvise.”
