The film’s mechanical gulls have aged badly; the sound has not aged at all. There is no musical score — only shrieks, wingbeats and the rising static of a flock — and much of it was performed by the early electronic composer Oskar Sala on a Mixtur-Trautonium, an instrument he played rather than programmed. Six decades on, it still doesn’t sound like anything else.
