The Met has let artists work from originals in its galleries since 1872, and this short follows Jas Knight through a copy of Velázquez’s Juan de Pareja. His case for it is the good part: almost every painter before the twentieth century learned this way, and “you haven’t begun to see a painting until you’ve copied it.” Then the line that lands — Velázquez’s brain is on that canvas.
