Long before enclosure, English farmers plowed shared fields into narrow strips, each turn of the plow piling soil into a ridge with a furrow beside it — and on the Isle of Axholme, those ridges and furrows never got flattened out. The island stayed undrained, marsh-ringed farmland until 17th-century engineering arrived, so its strip-fields survived while the rest of England moved on to enclosed plots. A local cycling route now traces the pattern through fields off Rocket Lane.
