The Mary Pit Head

An 80-foot concrete winding frame, all that's left of Big Mary

The Mary Pit Head

The 80-foot concrete winding frame of Mary Colliery’s No. 2 Pit — known locally as “Big Mary,” to distinguish it from a smaller rival pit called “Wee Mary” — is one of only two structures left from Fife’s coal-mining era, now standing in Lochore Meadows Country Park. Beside it sit the actual cage that lowered miners underground and a preserved steam locomotive of the kind once used in pits like this one. A noticeboard lists the pit’s dead and injured, pulled from old newspapers.
