Kamishibai (literally “paper theater”) was a Depression-era Japanese street-performance form: a small wooden stage holding hand-illustrated cards, narrated aloud by a bicycle-mounted storyteller selling sweets to the audience. The form preceded TV and influenced manga and anime’s visual grammar. Eric Nash’s book is the canonical illustrated history.
