Commissioned by King Ferdinand VII, military engineer León Gil de Palacio spent 1828 to 1830 building a scale model of Madrid as it stood that year — over 18 square meters of wood, silk, wire, sand, and metal at a scale of 1:816. It’s one of the oldest and largest surviving urban scale models in Europe, now the centerpiece of Madrid’s free-admission Museo de Historia.
