Tomb of Agios Athanasios

A painted Macedonian tomb outside Thessaloniki

Tomb of Agios Athanasios

The facade of this late-4th-century BC tomb is still painted. Golden-winged griffins crouch in the pediment, a narrow frieze of riders and soldiers files above the doorway, and two young men in long cloaks stand guard on either side of the entrance, with painted shields hanging over them. It sits in the village of Agios Athanasios, about 20 km west of Thessaloniki.
