Liverpool's First Enclosed Dock

The 1715 wall that turned weeks of unloading into a day

Liverpool's First Enclosed Dock

In a chamber under the Liverpool ONE shopping centre stands the brick wall of the dock that made the city. Before 1715, ships anchored out in the estuary while small boats ferried cargo across for weeks at a time; the plan was to dam the tidal creek and build a 100-by-200-metre enclosed dock inside it, and afterwards a ship could unload and reload in a day. Filled in in 1825, found again during redevelopment.
