Kirby Cove

A short Marin Headlands hike to a hidden Golden Gate Bridge view

Kirby Cove

A three-mile out-and-back from the Marin Headlands down to a gravelly cove, ending under the Golden Gate Bridge at a viewing angle the postcards don’t bother with — the bridge straight on, the city skyline behind it. The trick is that almost nobody hikes it: most visitors take the Vista Point pull-off at the north end and never realise the path down to the water is a few minutes’ drive away. Best at sunset; the fog rolling under the bridge from this angle is exactly the picture that everyone else is fighting for from a turn-out.
