The man who invented the American West was from Maine

John Ford Statue

Four Best Director Oscars, eleven films in the National Film Registry — tied with Howard Hawks for the most of any director — and the vistas that taught the world what a western looks like. He was born John Feeney in Cape Elizabeth and grew up in Portland’s Irish quarter, several thousand miles of continent away from Monument Valley. The statue sits in the city that raised him, which is the part nobody expects.
