Eclipse glasses are designed to be thrown away, which is why a collection running back to 1793 is such an odd and lovely thing to exist. A 1932 card from the Harvey & Lewis Co. opticians calls itself the ECLIPSE-O-SCOPE, prints “For exact time see local newspapers”, and spends its remaining space explaining Baily’s beads to whoever bought it. The pitch has barely changed; the typography has changed completely.
