Near Lisburn, this former high-security prison held paramilitary inmates through the Troubles and was where Bobby Sands and nine others died on hunger strike in 1981 — a single-story maze of H-block cells that housed some of the most consequential political prisoners in modern British and Irish history. Most of the site sits sealed and largely unchanged, which is exactly what makes standing in it feel different from reading about it.
