Highgate Cemetery opened in London in 1839 as one of the city’s “Magnificent Seven,” and today holds the graves of Karl Marx and Douglas Adams. In the 1970s, two rival self-declared vampire hunters publicly feuded over a vampire supposedly loose in the grounds, drawing night crowds who broke open tombs. One hunter was jailed in 1974 for interfering with human remains.
