John Gray was born in 1764 near Mount Vernon, joined the Virginia militia at 16 and was present at Yorktown. He died in Noble County, Ohio, in 1868 at 104, and was photographed in old age. He is buried in McElroy Family Cemetery near Hiramsburg, with a historic marker on State Route 821. The title is not uncontested: rivals simply couldn’t prove their claims.
