Gloucester Sea Serpent Statue

A monument to a monster that hundreds of people swore they saw

Gloucester Sea Serpent Statue

In the early 1800s a sea serpent off Gloucester was dismissed as a fisherman’s tale, right up until hundreds of people reported seeing it and naturalists came from across the region to work out what was in the harbour. Two centuries later the town has not let go. The serpent has a statue on the waterfront, pointed at the water the sightings came from.
