The Pressed Ginkgo Leaf in Alice in Wonderland

Deep time, opened from one leaf kept between two pages

The ginkgo is the oldest surviving tree genus on Earth, older than the dinosaurs, and it came close to vanishing entirely — it survived only because Buddhist monks in China kept cultivating it in temple gardens for centuries. This essay opens that whole deep-time story from one object: a single yellow leaf the author pressed as a child, still kept in her copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, lying against an illustration of the White Rabbit.
