Gates of the City (Portas da Cidade)

A full-scale replica of the Azores' city gates, rebuilt in a Massachusetts mill town

Gates of the City (Portas da Cidade)

A 60-foot-tall, 30-foot-wide reproduction of Ponta Delgada’s 18th-century city gates stands, with no real transition, on a traffic island in Fall River — built by the city’s large Azorean immigrant community as a monument to where they came from. It’s the kind of landmark that only makes sense once you know the backstory, and then it explains half the neighborhood around it.
