Funatsu-Tainai Lava Tree Mold

A cave in the shape of a tree that burned away

Funatsu-Tainai Lava Tree Mold

In 937, the Ken-Marubi flow came down Mount Fuji’s northern slopes, ran around a standing tree, and cooled into rock while the tree burned away inside it. What is left near the Kawaguchiko Field Center is a narrow cave in the exact shape of that trunk and its roots — you walk through the negative space of something gone for a thousand years.
