Erich Fromm's Rules of Listening

Six guidelines from a psychoanalyst who compared listening to reading poetry

Erich Fromm's Rules of Listening

Erich Fromm called listening “an art like the understanding of poetry” with its own rules, laid out in a 1974 Swiss seminar later published as The Art of Listening. Rule one is total concentration — nothing else on the listener’s mind, free of anxiety and of greed. Rule four demands enough empathy to feel the other person’s experience as your own, because, Fromm insists, understanding someone is a form of loving them.
