Mike Bliss conceived these silk flower lamps in 1984 as a trompe-l’oeil object — a tulip frozen at peak bloom that also happens to be a lamp — and MoMA is re-issuing them. The joke is that it works: the soft diffused glow through the petals is genuinely useful while remaining entirely absurd as a design proposition. The piece lives in the productive space between sculpture and functional object, which is exactly where the best lamps tend to live.
