The most-quoted bad prediction in computing has no source

Everyone knows IBM’s Thomas J. Watson said it, in 1943 or 1958, depending on who is telling you. The earliest appearance anyone can find is a 1981 trivia book, Facts and Fallacies, which credits “Thomas J. Watson of IBM” without saying which Watson or when; a 1983 compilation supplied the 1958 date. Watson’s own biographer went through the speeches, letters and meeting notes and found nothing.
