Edward Wilson went south as a physician and zoologist, and painted on the side. The essay shows the results: emperor penguins carrying chicks at Cape Crozier, watercolours of Beaufort Island and the Great Ice Barrier dated 4 January 1911, and a quick pencil sketch of three men packed into a pyramid tent, boots and mittens drying overhead. His bird plates also illustrated the Discovery expedition’s official account.
