Edward Abbey wrote “RETURN TO SENDER” in big bold letters on the envelope his army discharge papers arrived in — he had never wanted the job he was being fired from. His journals, published posthumously as Confessions of a Barbarian, include a young man’s manifesto on how not to die — “Not in a smelly old bloody-gutted bed” — and his real wish decades later: burial in his blue sleeping bag to fertilize a cactus, cliff rose, or sagebrush. His parting advice to environmentalists: “You will outlive the bastards.”
