Durham Town Hall

A three-foot 'Count' toured Europe's courts, then settled here

Durham Town Hall

Joseph Boruwlaski stood three feet three inches tall and performed as the “Little Count” at courts across Europe before retiring to Durham in 1790 — his suit, cane, hat and violin are still on display inside the Town Hall, alongside a life-size statue. The building itself dates to 1350: the Trade Guilds and Freemen of Durham still meet in its Guildhall, and audio guides now walk visitors through the Prince Bishops and the Mayor’s Bodyguard.
