Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum

Mumbai's oldest museum keeps a stone elephant from Elephanta Island and maps of the city's seven original islands

Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum

Opened in 1872 as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Bombay, and renamed in 1975 for Bhau Daji Lad, the city’s first Indian sheriff, this is Mumbai’s oldest museum. Inside are maps of the seven islands that became Mumbai, a model of Bombay Castle, and the stone elephant that once stood on Elephanta Island. A restoration reopened the building in 2008.
