The Pi runs mgetty and a tiny PPP daemon; the Mac dials a phone number, hears the modem handshake, and gets a real (NAT’d) IP address. A perfect Sunday project for the SE/30 or PowerBook 1400 you cannot bring yourself to retire. The audio of the modem handshake alone is worth the effort.
