Istanbul's stone walls, rebuilt in clay in Marylebone

Cup of Joy

EBBA’s Benni Allan went round Istanbul before drawing this — the stone walls, the recessed openings, the shaded courtyards — and the two floors on Blandford Street are the argument he came back with. Large blocks of Portland stone sit low in the walls with smaller fragments above, each piece positioned on site before the clay plaster was worked around it, so the surface reads as old masonry that has never existed anywhere else.
