Crankshaft Crossing

A Death Valley junction marked by a pile of abandoned engine crankshafts

Halfway down the 45-mile washboard road between Death Valley and Eureka Valley sits a junction marked only by a pile of abandoned engine crankshafts, nobody quite remembers whose, or why they’re stacked here. The accompanying signpost spells out CRANKSHAFT CROSSING in letters that weren’t painted but built, bead by bead, with an arc welder feeding molten metal onto steel.
