The noun is the stone bracket jutting from a wall to carry a beam or a balcony. The verb is better: to corbel is to build that bracket by stepping each course of stone slightly further out than the one beneath it, so a wall walks itself out into open air. Masons were vaulting whole roofs this way long before anyone worked out the arch.
