The 1693 earthquake razed medieval Noto and killed half its people. Rather than rebuild on the ruins, Sicily moved the town ten kilometres toward the coast and built it new on flat ground, spread out so nothing could domino again — one continuous late-Baroque decision. The cathedral is what that looks like from the bottom of its steps: a honey-limestone facade that goes gold in the last hour of light.
