Capella Kyoto

Kengo Kuma-designed hotel that feels like an old townhouse, not a chain

Capella Kyoto

Kengo Kuma’s design language — slatted timber, soft layered walls, the building absorbing rather than imposing — translates surprisingly well to a 52-room hotel in central Kyoto. The architecture refuses the high-luxe glassy thing in favor of something that reads as a continuation of the surrounding machiya townhouses. The kind of stay that earns the city it sits in.
