Camp Butner Museum

A WWII training camp that rose overnight on North Carolina farmland

Camp Butner covered more than 40,000 acres of North Carolina farmland, with nearly 1,800 military buildings raised in months. Over 250,000 troops trained there, including the 78th “Lightning” Division, and German and Italian prisoners of war were held on site. The museum, in one of the country’s two remaining military gymnasiums, is free and open 10 to 3 on the first Saturday of each month.
