bumbaze

To bewilder or stupefy

In print since 1587, possibly an alteration of the Scots baze, to dismay. This week’s A.Word.A.Day theme is words that sound dirty and aren’t, and Anu Garg heads off the obvious reading himself: no backside is involved. To be bumbazed is to have your thoughts sent into a maze without a map.
