In 1913, an oil well on Sarah Rector’s Creek Freedman land allotment struck a gusher paying out $300 a day, and newspapers took to calling the eleven-year-old the richest Black girl in the world. She’s buried back where she started, in Blackjack Cemetery in Taft — one of the roughly dozen historic all-Black towns still standing in Oklahoma, of more than fifty that once existed.
