Benedictine Monastery of Las Condes

Two monks designed a church out of two white cubes and let the Andean light do the rest

Benedictine Monastery of Las Condes

The church of the Holy Trinity monastery, on a hill above Santiago, was designed in the 1960s by two of the community’s own monks, and it is two white cubes set at an angle to each other, their openings placed so the light arrives indirectly and moves across the white walls through the day. The approach is arranged so the drive uncovers the Andes before it reveals the building. Sixteen monks still live there and sometimes chant in the evenings; the advice is early morning or late afternoon.
