A bellwether is someone or something that signals a coming trend — an indicator species for the future. The word is literal: shepherds hung a bell on the lead sheep of the flock, traditionally a castrated ram called a “wether,” and the rest followed its sound. Markets, elections, and industries have been borrowing that bell ever since.
