The Argyle Street Ash

The only tree on one of Glasgow's busiest streets, and the UK's Tree of the Year

The Argyle Street Ash

It stands alone in front of a tenement on Argyle Street, 75 feet tall and about 175 years old, with no other tree in sight along one of Glasgow’s busiest roads. Local telling has it arriving in the mid-1800s as a stowaway among primrose roots a family brought home from abroad, then surviving Victorian industry, the Clydeside Blitz, redevelopment and ash dieback in the lee of the flats. It holds Glasgow’s Tree Preservation Order No. 1, granted in 1980, won the Woodland Trust’s UK Tree of the Year in 2025 as the public’s wildcard entry, and placed twelfth for Britain in the 2026 European final.
