André Gregory's Letter to Richard Avedon

After Richard Avedon’s death, theater director André Gregory finally sent the letter he’d meant to write for years, addressing their one real disagreement: work. “Artists are always working, though they may not seem as if they are,” he wrote. “They are like plants growing in winter. You can’t see the fruit, but it is taking root below the earth.” He recalled Avedon’s clifftop house in Montauk, one of the loveliest Gregory had seen, which Avedon designed and almost never visited: “You chose work. I have chosen the life.”
