Alfred Frueh's Miniature Gallery Love Letter

A 1913 love letter that unfolds into a tiny paper art gallery

Alfred Frueh's Miniature Gallery Love Letter

Caricaturist Alfred Frueh courted his fiancée Giuliette Fanciulli partly through the mail, and one 1913 letter folds out into a tiny paper art gallery complete with miniature framed works hung on drawn walls. The whimsical construction survives today in the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art. It’s a small, handmade record of a courtship carried out in paper and ink rather than grand gestures.
